Albert Alex Gilchrist

 

 

Albert Alex Gilchrist served in the 24th Battalion of the 3rd Brigade of the Australian Field Artillery, and died 8th May 1916, aged 26.

 

He was the son of George and Kate Gilchrist.  He was also the husband of Mrs E B Gilchrist of New South Wales.

 

The 1891 census shows that, although the family were Scottish, he had been born in Eglwysbach, where he and the rest of the family were living in 1891.

 

By 1901 the family had moved to St George.

 

Albert Alex Gilchrist is buried in France in Wimereux Cemetery, situated about 5 kilometres north of Boulogne.

 

There are a total of 3017 casualties buried in Wimereux - UK 2330, Canada 220, Australia 208, New Zealand 79, South Africa 10 and Germany 170.
